When do you need to replace your mobility scooter wheel?

All mobility scooters need maintenance from time to time, including replacing the wheels. Here are some situations where a wheel replacement is necessary.

  • A worn-out tyre tread: Rubber naturally degrades over time, which means the tyre tread degrades, even if you do not use your scooter all that much. Some signs of a worn-out tyre tread include smoothness, baldness, cracks in the rubber, reduced traction, and the scooter slipping more on wet surfaces.
  • Repeated punctures or tube failures: Experiencing repeated punctures or tube failures is a clear sign that the wheel needs to be replaced.
  • Bent or damaged rim: A bent or damaged rim can cause vibration or uneven wear. This can happen by hitting a curb or a pot hole. When this becomes warped, the tyre won’t sit evenly, and there will be a visible wobble when spinning.
  • Worn bearings: This can be noticed by listening for a grinding or rumbling noise. It can also make the wheel feel loose or wobbly.
  • Motor hub issues: Motor hub issues usually appear as stripped keyways and cracked hubs, often caused by excessive play between the wheel and motor shaft. Replacing the entire wheel hub is often the easiest option.

In some cases, individuals may want to replace their wheel simply for an upgrade – even if the wheels they currently have work fine. Upgrading to a solid tyre, for example, is a popular choice, as solid tyres avoid flats permanently and require no maintenance.
