Do I really need it?

Yes you do because as the driver of a mobility vehicle you are personally liable for any injury you may accidentally cause to other people or property.  You also need to consider to the cost to you of replacing or repairing your vehicle if it is damaged or stolen.

Under current legislation there is no requirement for mobility scooter drivers to hold mobility scooter insurance in the same way that car drivers are legally required to hold adequate insurance. However, as with any insurance policy you need to weigh up whether you can afford to take the risk against the relatively small cost of insurance.  There is no legal requirement to take out home insurance and other types of cover, but most of us do because it’s sensible to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our property.

Scooters can be expensive to purchase, could you afford to replace it if it was stolen?  If you accidentally scraped a parked car, or had a collision that broke someone’s leg could you afford the legal and compensation costs? If you broke down how would you get home? The peace of mind and financial benefits of being insured are clear – especially when you consider Premier Care’s insurance starts at just £86.00 for a year. For high value products costing over £5000 is a different policy starting at £181 a year.

The Department for Transport makes the following comments with reference to mobility scooter insurance: “it is strongly advised that people take out insurance to cover personal safety, other people’s safety and the value of the vehicle.”

What to look for in a policy

Personal liability cover to protect you from compensation claims if you have an accident causing injuries to other people or property – up to £2m is a good level of cover.

1.Accidental Damage cover; including fire, storm or flood.

  1. Theft and vandalism cover.
  2. 24/7 breakdown recovery to get both you and your vehicle home safely – Premier Care are the only insurance provider to include this as standard.
  3. No excess charges.

It’s also a good idea to take out warranty which, unlike insurance, covers you for repairs to your vehicle due to mechanical and electrical breakdown.

What information do I need for scooter insurance?

To take out insurance you will need to provide the following information:

-          Scooter make and model

-          Age of vehicle / manufactured date

-          Classification (i.e. 4mph, 6mph or 8mph)

-          Price you paid for the scooter

-          Serial/frame number (finding the serial number may be difficult if the scooter was bought second hand, but can be located on the scooter itself and consists of a long string of number/letters often by the battery. New scooters should have the serial number within the documentation).
